"Method" Acting

Simply stated, "Method" acting is acting "real" by using experiences and impressions from the actor's own life to create the life of the character onstage.

Lee Strasberg described the results of this approach by stating that "conventional" acting comes out to you, the audience, and "shows" you, and "demonstrates" to you.   ["Method"] acting demands that you, the audience, go where it is going, so that you not simply understand what the character is experiencing, you also experience it.

Training in the fundamentals of Relaxation, Sense Memory, Concentration & Imagination, the actor begins the lifelong process of using himself to breathe life into the fiction of the play, as his inner awareness and artistic sense of truth develop with time and experience.

The Workshop
Acceptance into the "method" workshop is by telephone interview with Harry Governick. The purpose of the interview is to explain to the prospective student the often intense nature of the work. This training is not for everyone. The interview eliminates those who are not serious about acting as a way of life, or might be looking for a more conventional approach to acting, and insures a cohesive group of people who can be trusted with each other's emotions.

Requirements

Because the life of an actor is one of extraordinary discipline, the following guidelines have been adopted at TheatrGROUP for the benefit of the student. Students who have trouble following these guidelines shouldn't expect to do well in a serious pursuit of an acting career.
    1) Regular attendance is mandatory. Absence is excused due to work in the industry, and family or health emergencies only. One unexcused absence will result in a gentle warning. Two unexcused absences will result in dismissal without prejudice. No exceptions.

    2) Punctuality is mandatory. Attendance at the workshop should be given the same priority one would give to reporting to a movie set at a designated call time. Two times late, and the student is dismissed without prejudice. No exceptions.

    3) Payment of tuition is expected in a timely manner. A work-study program is available for students financially stressed. Work-study exchanges workshop privileges for work done at the theatre four hours per week on a regulary scheduled day. The work can be anything from cleaning the theatre, to administrative functions, depending on the abilities of the student.

    4) Homework assignments are given weekly, and expected to be accomplished faithfully. The workshop is of no value for those who do not work at home on their assignment. TheatrGROUP has no desire to accept tuition from those who are not serious about the actor's art.

    5) Students are expected to do scenework at least once a month, but encouraged to do scenework every chance they get. Monologues are not encouraged, although under certain conditions the student is allowed to work on a monologue.
Member Privileges
    1) The theatre is available to students for rehearsal 24-hours a day at no extra charge.

    2) Should TheatrGROUP decide to produce a play, members of the workshop will be given first consideration in casting.

    3) A copy machine is available to copy scenes, etc. at six cents per copy.

    4) A resume service and career guidance is available for a small fee.

    5) Private coaching is available for $25/hour. This is a 50% savings from any other coaching available in the St. Louis area.

    6) Members can use the theatre to "hang out", read plays, start their own separate play reading sessions, or other theatre related projects, and have "company" related parties.
Tuition
Tuition is $15.00 per week. Why so cheap? Because you're actors.
Visa & MasterCard Accepted
